With the Guardian recently publishing their ‘10 best first lines in fiction’, I thought I would raid my book collection to compile my own alternative list.

1) George Orwell – 1984

“It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”1984 the book by George Orwell

Orwell’s dystopian novel, which gave birth to the notion of Big Brother, begins with this wonderful line. Immediately we are aware this is no ordinary world, a world where time has miraculously changed. If time has changed, we are left wondering what else has been altered.
